  • As The Kid in the 1984 film Purple Rain, which shot him to superstardom

  • In 1986, Prince played Christopher Tracy in Under The Cherry Moon. The film flopped but the album, Parade, is one of his classics

  • Prince stripped down for the cover of Lovesexy in 1988, causing some stores to wrap it in black paper

  • In 1990 after several elaborate tours, Prince hit the road with the minimalist Nude tour. Here he is at Wembley Stadium in 1990

  • Prince changed his name to the unpronounceable, glyph in 1993, commemorated on the plates used at his wedding to Mayte Garcia in 1996

  • In 2007 Prince performed during the half-time show of the NFL’s Super Bowl XLI football game between the Colts and the Bears in Miami

  • He was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the BET awards in 2010

  • Prince’s later albums weren’t always well received but his reputation as one of the greatest live acts on Earth never waned. Here he is at the Montreux jazz festival in Switzerland in 2013

  • Prince at the Grammys in 2015, where he paid tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement
